What is Content Creation?

By Samya Colon

By now you should be very familiar with the term “content creating”. However, if you choose to live a screen-free life, then let me guide you through it. Content creation is the process of developing and sharing material that informs, entertains, or engages an audience.

There are four main categories for digital content:

  1. Written– blogs, web pages, articles, captions, & newsletters
  2. Audio– podcasts, audiobooks, interviews, and voiceovers
  3. Visual– photos, charts, GIFs, infographics
  4. Video– tv, short films, reels, commercials

In 2025, most of us are familiar with TikTok videos “reels.” These are generally one-minute videos posted with the intent to inform or entertain. Although this is common, digital content—as we now know—comes in all kinds of media.

Why is this important?

Well, according to our friends at Ahrefs, the marketing funnel is essential for grabbing the attention of your target audience. The goal is to funnel them down from awareness (choosing your target market) to loyalty and advocacy (long-term patron). The further down the funnel, the more your content improves, which, in turn, improves your brand.

You’re probably thinking, “All I have to do is post content and everyone will love it?” Well yes and no. Your content may not be everyone’s content. They may not stay on the post for long because it just doesn’t fit their niche. It doesn’t mean your content is boring or uninteresting. It means you have to work harder to find your target audience and create with them in mind while also staying true to your own interests.

The beauty of the marketing funnel lies in its balance of simplicity and depth. It gives us a clear visual of the customer journey while also pushing us to create content that matches real needs. Most importantly, it shifts the mindset from chasing one-time sales to building lasting relationships.

How to create content?

Generally, the procedure for producing content for any platform is essentially the same. The most crucial thing to consider before you start shooting, taking pictures, or distributing is the kind of material you want to create.

Find out what is popular and what you want to discuss on your channel by doing some research. This will ensure that your material has a clear goal and help you stay on course.

Shortening what could easily be a ten-step process into three, here are the steps I think you should take to put out quality content.

  1. Research what is trendy
  2. Decide type and platform
  3. Create & produce

Research what is trendy.

If you go to our home page, you’ll see a list of free tools that you can use in your marketing journey. These also apply to content creation. For example, Google Keyword is a great free tool to use to your advantage.

Google keywords are like the internet’s secret code; they connect what people search for with the content and ads that show up. By using tools like Google Keyword Planner, you can discover what your audience is looking for and use those words to land your spot in Google’s spotlight.

I think it’s important to note that entering any trend is tricky. If the market is oversaturated, you might have a hard time pushing out unique content that not everyone has done already. This can be a good challenge if you are someone who is genuinely authentic. Trendsetters start somewhere, right? I mean, the “Tiffany Plate” didn’t drop from the sky. That’s the beauty of trends and starting to create quality content.

Decide type & platform

When it comes to creating content, one size definitely doesn’t fit all. First, pick your type of content: blog posts, videos, social media snippets, podcasts, or infographics. Think about what fits your message and what you enjoy making. Want to teach something? Go for a blog or YouTube tutorial. Want to entertain or go viral? Short videos or memes are your best friends.

Next, match it to the right platform. TikTok and Instagram Reels love quick, visual, and fun content. Blogs and LinkedIn posts are perfect for deeper ideas. YouTube shines for storytelling and tutorials. The trick? Meet your audience where they hang out and serve them the content style they love. Me personally? The content I enjoy consuming depends on the time of day.

Create & produce

Once you have planned your content, it is time to create and produce. This is where your ideas come to life, whether you are writing a blog, filming a video, designing a graphic, or recording a podcast. At this stage, focus on bringing your concept to reality.

Next comes editing and polishing, which is where your content really shines. Trim awkward pauses in videos, fix typos in blogs, enhance colors in graphics, and add music or sound effects to make everything more engaging. You do not need expensive software to do this. Free tools like CapCut or iMovie are great for video editing, Canva works well for graphics and social posts, and Audacity is useful for podcasts. Even a little polish can take your content from average to professional and eye-catching.

Think of it like baking. Your idea is the recipe, creating is mixing the ingredients, and editing and polishing is adding the frosting and sprinkles that make everyone take notice.

How to Measure Your Content’s Success

Publishing your content is just the beginning. To really grow and improve, you need to know what’s working and what’s not. Measuring success helps you understand your audience and create content they actually enjoy.

Start by checking how many people are seeing your content. Views and traffic give you a sense of reach, and tools like Google Analytics or WordPress stats make this easy to track. Next, look at engagement. Likes, comments, shares, and clicks show whether your content is connecting with your audience.

Conversions are another big indicator. Are readers signing up for your newsletter, downloading a guide, or taking another action you want them to take? Time on page matters too; if people stick around for a while, your content is holding their attention. And don’t forget social shares. When your content gets shared, it’s reaching new audiences and building awareness.

By keeping an eye on these metrics, you can figure out what works, tweak what doesn’t, and make your next post even stronger.

It’s not easy, but it is obtainable by anyone who truly wants it. Learning how to create content is not linear, but the outcome can be very comforting. You have the ability to grow and have hundreds and thousands of people see your content.

Does that make it worth it in the end? Let me know in the comments below!
